Cafeteria

The cafeteria is located in the Multi-Purpose Room through the double doors at the end of the building on the Butler side.

  • Elementary eat breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria. Middle and High eat only lunch there. Some Middle and High School classes elect to have the Support Teacher go and get the breakfasts and take them to the class instead of taking the entire class down to the cafeteria.

  • Meal time schedules will be distributed at Pre-Planning. For obvious reasons, it is very important that everyone adhere to their scheduled times.

  • Students get in the lunch line as soon as they enter the cafeteria. They make their choice and then go to their table.

  • Students all have a number for lunch that they input into the machine by the cashier. All students’ paperwork for free or reduced lunch must be turned in by a certain date. Keep track of whose paperwork is lacking and inform your component Social Worker if there is missing paperwork as the deadline approaches or you may find yourself dealing with a student who does not get a hot lunch. (They will get a PBJ sandwich.)

  • There are not assigned tables in the Cafeteria, but all classes should sit together as a group with their teacher at the table with them.

  • Different components will have different procedures for who escorts the classes at lunch time. Often, Lead Teachers use this time to take their own lunch break and the students are escorted by the Support Teachers. This is not a rule that is set in stone, however, and Leads may choose to do it differently.

  • Realize that lunch time can be a time for extra class management skills to be applied as students are in a large group and in a large room, away from the constrained surroundings of the classroom.

  • Be sure to explicitly teach your students your behavior expectations for them in regard to transitioning to and from the cafeteria and their time in there. For example, students should ask permission before getting up from the table for any reason – including throwing away their trash when they are finished.

  • Make sure that your class leaves a clean table by clearing off all trash. There is cleaning spray available by the paper towel holder that classes may use to clean their table. DO make sure that you assign the task of cleaning the table to a student who can responsibly hold the spray container of table cleaner.
